The series of photographs is inspired by the Ukrainian and Soviet artist Kazimir Malevich. Malevich often incorporated the symbol of the cross in his work.
The cross symbolizes human existence. The vertical line represents our divine component or connection to the spiritual realm. However, a person does not exist separately from their physical body, and the material world is depicted by the horizontal line. Somewhere at the intersection of these two concepts, a person exists, constantly seeking balance between the spiritual and material realms.
This lifelong process never stops or freezes. If a person loses their connection to the spiritual realm, they lose their identity, their ability to create, love, and show compassion. But if a person fully immerses themselves in the spiritual realm, they lose their connection to the earthly world in which they were born and become detached.
The figure of the model symbolizes our soul, or more specifically what psychologist Carl Jung called the anima. It is both static and monumental, yet at the same time, naked and vulnerable.
