HYPNOS’ THRESHOLD

Hypnos — son of Night and brother of Death. He dwelled in a cave untouched by sunlight. His breath brought peace to gods and mortals, reached kings and heroes, and subdued even Zeus himself. The sleep he governed was no enemy: it offered solace, filled the mind with images, shielded from exhaustion, and returned one to the source.

Yet no one can remain in his realm forever. There comes a moment when we draw near to the threshold of sleep. We thank Hypnos for the depth of his kingdom and step beyond — into the place where awakening begins.

This awakening is unlike an ordinary morning. It arrives with maturity, as a long-awaited knowledge of the self. For years we lose ourselves in foreign voices and borrowed expectations, until at last the darkness grows transparent and our own light breaks through.

According to Jung, this is the encounter with the Self — the inner center untouched by external noise. Sleep remains a part of us, enriching the psyche with symbols, yet it is awakening that brings the clarity which makes a person whole.

At the threshold of Hypnos the figure is still unsteady, yet a solid presence emerges — a sign that the true self rises from the shadows. As dawn emerges from night, so the Self is born from sleep: not in conflict, but in a natural passage.

These images do not reject sleep; they capture the instant of its completion.
They speak of awakening, of an inner dawn,
when the human being opens their eyes for the first time
and in the light recognizes the reflection of their own essence.
